The Patient & Carer Race Equality Framework (PCREF) is an important & much needed thing with the intention of making meaningful inroads to improving the longstanding problem of race inequality & discrimination in mental health services. Implementing PCREF is a significant undertaking for any organisation - that will touch the organisation at every level. Coproduction is an essential part of any implementation of PCREF. 100 Meanings is designed to supply organisations on their journey of implementing PCREF with meaningful insights from those receiving services about how things need to be improved. This will help servies better focus their efforts.
PCREF is an acknowledgement that people from racialised background have a worse experience accessing services, have a worse experience of services, and have poorer outcomes having used services. As part of tackling this known problem, NHS England provided a list of 10 competencies that mental health organisations need to demonstrate - the demonstration of these competencies evidencing efforts that act to address racial inequalities. Those competencies are:
Cultural awareness
Partnership working
Staff knowledge & awareness
Coproduction
Workforce
Co-learning
Leadership & governance
Information & advice
Use of data
Digital inclusion
But what does this list of 10 things mean in terms of patient experience and service delivery in your organisation?
Having clear answers to that question is foundational to your organisation meeting its duty to implement PCREF meaningfully - and doing so taking a coproduction-led approach.
We can help your organisation get clarity on the meaning of the 10 PCREF competencies in terms of patient experience & service delivery. Armed with what is meaningful, your organisation will know better where to focus its efforts to improve the delivery of its service - which will result in a more effective implementation of PCREF.
